Introduction
Apprenticeships are fully funded qualifications that can support our staff with their continued professional development (CPD). They provide an opportunity for staff to:
- learn something new
- refresh existing knowledge
- improve skills
- keep up-to-date with the latest developments in their profession.
A service can also recruit an apprentice by creating an apprenticeship post within their team. This is an excellent opportunity to introduce new talent to the council and help their development as well as contributing to your service.
The apprenticeship team are working with managers to identify appropriate qualifications for apprenticeship posts and those wanting to continue their professional development.
Who this section is for
If you are a staff member looking to progress your professional development and gain a qualification that recognises your skills and knowledge, an apprenticeship may be the solution. You’ll need to discuss this with your line manager before registering your interest in a qualification.
In this section, you’ll find out:
- if you qualify
- how an apprenticeship works
- what qualifications are available
- how to register your interest
- how you will be required to evidence your learning.
Who qualifies
You can apply to undertake an apprenticeship qualification if you are a staff member and either have a:
- permanent contract
- temporary contract that is long enough to cover the length of time it will take to achieve the qualification.
Your manager must approve the apprenticeship, and the qualification you choose must:
- align with your current job
- help you grow in your role
- meet the needs of your team and service.
Changing your job
If you decide to apply for a new job at the council, while you are still undertaking your apprenticeship, you may still be able to continue with your qualification if you can demonstrate the skills and behaviours required are relevant in your new job.
Leaving the council
If you leave the council, you may be able to continue the apprenticeship qualification with your new employer. This should be discussed with them at the interview stage.
