    Health and wellbeing champions

Health and wellbeing champions are volunteers who:

    • have an enthusiasm and interest in health and wellbeing
    • are approachable and helpful
    • have a basic understanding of healthy lifestyles.

    More about health and wellbeing

We have a dedicated health and wellbeing page where you'll find everything you need to stay healthy, both physically and mentally. As a health and wellbeing champion this will also help you to support others that contact you.

Our health and wellbeing directory provides a variety of support that we offer as well as many external resources, to help you take care of and improve your wellbeing. There are lots of useful categorised resources, charities and other organisations you can signpost staff to, in your role as a champion, that can provide the right support based on an individual's needs.

    Prevent champions

As a champion you are expected to:

    • have a good knowledge of radicalisation, extremism and the Prevent programme
    • be the point of contact for your team or department so you can share your knowledge, cascade relevant information and answer any questions.

Healthy chat (making every contact count)

    You’ll learn how to:

    Why you should get involved

We have many ideas on how to make the websites and digital platforms used at the council better, however like with any product, its success is measured by the customers who want to use it.

This is where you come in. As our customers, we need to know what you think (good or bad) of the changes we make and new features we build!

By getting feedback on your experience of using the digital products we create we can make sure that they are usable, meet expectations and fulfil a need.

What you’ll be expected to do

As we work our way through our digital projects we'll need varying amounts of feedback. Sometimes we'll just ask you to answer a quick poll, other times we'll ask you to get involved in some user testing.

You can decide how you want to participate and how much you get involved. We consider any feedback is better than none!

We just need you to answer a few questions so we know how to contact you and how you want to get involved.

    What they do

Champions are available to support their colleagues in the workplace with health and wellbeing issues, such as mental health, fitness and weight loss.

Their role is to inspire and support others to make positive lifestyle changes so they can maintain a good standard of wellbeing and live healthier lives.

    They will do this by:

    • signposting to services where colleagues could get information and support to improve lifestyle issues, such as mental health
    • promoting healthy activities within the workplace, for example walking or running groups and drop a dress size or mindfulness sessions
    • sharing information about wellbeing activities happening locally, such as reading groups, cooking, baking groups, arts and crafts
    • be the point of contact in the team for any colleague who wants to know and find out more about health and wellbeing activities.

    Training

Health and wellbeing champions are required to attend 2 training sessions when they sign up:

    Interested in becoming a champion?

We’d love to hear from you and to get you involved to become a health and wellbeing champion.

    Find a wellbeing champion

There are over 100 health and wellbeing champions from a range of service areas across the council.

Champions are available during their normal working hours (generally Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5pm, although some are part time).

You can contact a champion by email or Teams chat. They are also happy to discuss with you through voice or video chat, just contact them to let them know you are calling first.

    What they do

Champions are available to support their colleagues:

    • learn new digital skills
    • gain digital confidence
    • overcome barriers to become digitally active
    • with simple tasks such as how to:
      • access a digital payslip
      • book leave
      • set up a personal email account
      • access online learning opportunities.

This includes supporting our staff that don't use a computer during their daily work, so that they are not digitally excluded both in the workplace and to give them more confidence using technology in their personal lives.

    Training

We are developing some 'train the trainer' training to provide our champions with the resources, approaches and skills they can use during their role as a champion to help other members of staff.
