Introduction
Display screen equipment, often referred to as DSE, includes:
- PCs
- laptops
- tablets
- TVs
- smartphones.
If you use any of these for at least an hour or more at a time, you are classed as a DSE user.
The legal part
As your employer, the council has a responsibility to make sure that any display screen equipment that you use has been set up correctly so you can work safely.
This is a legal requirement under the UK Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992.
The regulations are in place to protect DSE users from the health risks associated with display screen equipment such as:
- repetitive strain injury (RSI)
- headaches
- eyestrain and fatigue
- musculoskeletal injuries, including back problems.
Your responsibilities as a DSE user
Display screen equipment course
Every three years you are required to complete the DSE eLearning course. You will receive an email reminder when you are next due to take it.
The course will help you to:
- reduce the health risks associated with DSE
- maintain a good working environment
- identify and minimise any risks in your work environment
- set up your workstation.
At the end of the training, you’ll be asked to do a short quiz. You must answer 80% of the questions correctly to pass the course.
DSE assessment
Once you have completed the display screen equipment course, you should also carry out a DSE assessment. This will help you to assess your current workstation set up and make sure it is still correct.
However, you should also carry out a DSE assessment if:
- you move to a new workstation
- you are experiencing pain or discomfort while at your workstation
- there is a change to your physical circumstances, such as you become pregnant, or you are injured
- make a change to your existing workstation, such as add an extra monitor, or adjust the way it is used.
