Introduction to EDI:

1.About equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI)

On this page:

    Introduction

Equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) is about treating everyone fairly, celebrating our differences, and making sure everyone feels like they belong.

    • Equality means giving people the same opportunities and removing unfair barriers.
    • Diversity is about recognising and respecting people’s differences, such as background, culture, or experience.
    • Inclusion means creating an environment where everyone feels welcome, respected and able to contribute.

    Why it is important

EDI is at the heart of how we serve our communities and the way we work together across the council. When we do this well, it makes a difference for everyone:

    • Our residents - when we understand that people have different needs, we can provide a better customer experience for everyone.
    • The council - when everyone feels included, we work better and more effectively together and deliver improved services.
    • You - be your authentic self at work, with space and encouragement to share and demonstrate your unique ideas and talents to help you reach your potential.

    Equality, diversity and inclusion policy

Everyone is unique, in terms of our background, experience, skills or motivations, and we value our people for their differences. Supporting an inclusive culture helps each of us benefit from a wider range of perspectives, experiences and skills.

Our equality diversity and inclusion (EDI) in employment policy covers how we treat everyone when:

    • carrying out our functions
    • we plan policies or change
    • we provide or commission services
    • we recruit or fulfil our role as an employer.
