Introduction
Across the council, in our offices, depots and other council-owned sites, we have a number of:
- first aiders
- emergency first aiders
- appointed persons.
These are employees who:
- volunteer to be trained to give help to others who are injured or ill in the workplace
- manage situations to keep colleagues and customers safe and prevent no further harm if they have become ill or injured.
- work at one of our sites at least three days per week.
The role of the first aider
In an emergency, a first aider will:
- calmly assess the situation
- minimise any risks
- recognise the requirement for first aid
- assess injuries and illness
- administer emergency treatment and life support
- provide support and reassurance
- call for assistance from the emergency services, if required.
