Desks and drop-in spaces:

1.About desks and drop-in spaces

On this page:

    Introduction

We know that being flexible and working together helps get things done. That's why we offer hot-desking areas at many of our council offices.

Whether you work from home, are visiting from another office, or simply need a change of scenery, we have convenient and well-equipped workspaces available to accommodate you.

    Hot-desking explained

Hot-desking is a concept where desks or workstations are not assigned to specific individuals. Instead, staff can pick where to work based on where they need to be and who they need to work with.

For those of us who typically work from home, or need to move around a lot for our job, hot desks offer handy touchdown spaces at council premises where we can briefly work, meet with colleagues, or charge our devices.

    Benefits of hot-desking

    Areas designated for hot-desking offer:

    • Different types of seating: Have your pick of a range of workspaces, such as desks you can stand or sit at, comfy areas for catch-ups, large tables for working together, or quiet spots if you need to focus.

    • Modern technology: Get connected with network access points and/or council Wi-Fi. Plus you’ll have access to useful things like printers.

    • Recharging points: Both for your IT equipment and phone, with power outlets at every desk, and for yourself, with a nearby refreshment area.

    • Places to work together: You can collaborate with your colleagues, whether it's for casual meetings, sharing ideas, or just chatting.

    Hot-desking options

There are a range of options available for hot-desking:

    • Agile hubs offer a range of desks that can be booked by any staff member.
    • Neighbourhood areas are areas with desks that can only be booked by specific teams.
    • Drop-in spaces are open areas that you do not need to book - just turn up and use one.

    Hot-desking etiquette

These hot-desking tips will help you and your colleagues get the most out of these workspaces.

    • Keep it clean
Always tidy up your desk or working space for the next person. Throw away any trash and wipe down the surface if needed.

    • Be aware of noise levels
Try not to disturb others who are working. Keep conversations at a reasonable volume. Use headphones for music or calls.

    • Watch the time
Be aware of how long you stay at the desk, especially during busy times when others might need it too.

    • Respect the booking system
If there's a system for reserving desks, follow it. Don't use a desk that is reserved for someone else, and if you have reserved the space, make sure you stick to your booking time.

    • Be a good neighbour
Keep your workspace organised and respect the space of people using neighbouring desks.

    • Be friendly
Be open to chatting and collaborating with others who are using the hot-desking area. Good communication can make the hot-desking experience better for everyone.
