3.Apply for voluntary redundancy

    Application window closed

    The application window for voluntary redundancy is now closed.

    No applications will be considered outside of the application window.

    We are not obliged to accept an application for voluntary redundancy. The notional leaving date (expected last day of employment) for any voluntary redundancy made during the last window is Saturday 31 October 2026.

    Submit an application

    Follow the steps below to submit an application for voluntary redundancy.

    Please note:

    If you are a chief officer, there is a separate process for you to follow.

    Fill in the online form

    Use the button below to access the online form.

    Select the Proceed button.

    Then choose the ERYC staff button.

    Non-network users

    If you are a non-network user you won’t be able to access the online form from your personal device.

    You should contact your manager to make arrangements to complete and submit the application together. If this is not possible, you’ll need to provide the information detailed under What you’ll need to include and Further details below to your manager, who will submit the application on your behalf.

    What you'll need to include

    You’ll need to tell us your:

    • National Insurance number (shown on your payslip)
    • date of birth.

    Then press the Select your details button which will automatically populate the form with your:

    • full name
    • position details
    • line manager information.

    Check the pre-populated details are correct. If anything is incorrect let your manager know as they will be able to make a note when they complete their section of the form.

    Further details

    You’ll then you need to provide:

    • Details of any secondment, if relevant.
    • If your position is grant funded.
    • The date you began working at the council - check your contract of employment if you are unsure.
    • Whether you have continuous service from another qualifying local government organisation - check the Redundancy Payments Order 1999 document on the Legislation government website. If yes, enter the date - check the reckonable service date on your contract of employment if you are unsure.
    • Your workbase - select from the dropdown options or choose Other if your workbase doesn’t appear.
    • Whether you are a member of the East Riding Pension Fund.
    • What impact you think removing your position would have on service delivery and the workload and morale of the remaining staff and how this could be mitigated.

    Select the Next button.

    Agree to the declaration on the next page and submit the form.

    Confirmation email received

    You will receive an email to confirm your application has been submitted.

    Manager completes the form

    Your manager will receive your application and complete their section of the form, providing a recommendation to your director.

    What happens next

    Your application will then go through a number of further checks and approval stages. It will be considered and needs to be approved by all of the following to be successful:

    • Director - consider business needs and liaise with the people services business partner team to decide whether to progress your application. If the director agrees, they will:
      • ask the HR advice centre to calculate the redundancy payment amount and any pension strain costs, if applicable
      • receive an assessment from the finance team on potential cost savings within 36 months to enable them to make a decision based on the information and figures provided. If approved by your director, you will be asked if you want to continue your application after reviewing your estimated redundancy payment and pension benefits, if applicable.
    • Executive director - review the application with the departmental leadership team and following the meeting make a decision.
    • Corporate leadership team - make a final decision based on business needs and the impact on the council’s ability to maintain services.

    If your request is:

    • Rejected at any stage, your manager will arrange a meeting with you to inform you and you will also receive confirmation of the outcome in writing. You are unable to appeal the decision.
    • Approved at all stages, you will receive a final offer.

    Chief officer application

    What happens next

    The chief executive will consult with the leader of the council and the director of legal and democratic services to decide whether to progress your application. If they agree, they will:

    • ask the HR advice centre to calculate the redundancy payment amount and any pension strain costs, if applicable
    • receive an assessment from the finance team on potential cost savings within 36 months to enable them to make a decision on the information and figures provided.

    If your request is:

    • Rejected, your executive director or the chief executive will inform you and the HR advice centre will confirm the outcome in writing. You are unable to appeal the decision.
    • Approved, your executive director or the chief executive will notify you and you will receive a final offer.
