    • Select your pay grade from the dropdown below.
    • Refer to your length of service.

    Carry over unused leave

    If you are:

    • full-time, you can carry over up to 37 hours (one week) of leave to the next leave year
    • not full-time, you can carry over equal to one week of your contractual weekly working hours.
    Remember to use your leave

Make sure you manage your leave efficiently throughout the year, and have arranged with your manager to take any leave you are not carrying over prior to 31 March each year.

Any leave you have remaining above the one week carry over limit, (or equivalent for part time staff), can only be carried over in exceptional circumstances and with prior agreement between your manager and people services.

If you work full-time, as well as your annual leave, each year you usually get eight bank holidays (depending on when Easter falls).

Sometimes the government grants an extra bank holiday to reflect special occasions, such as a royal wedding or coronation.

You can view the bank holidays for the next three years on the GOV.UK website.

If you work part-time, your entitlement to the bank and public holidays is calculated pro-rata.

Bank or public holidays that you are entitled to are recorded and automatically allocated as leave on employee self-service (iTrent).

    Want to know more?

You can read more about bank and public holidays and how they are calculated in the following sections of the annual leave guidelines:

    • Section 7: Public holidays
    • Section 19: Calculating public holidays if you are part-time or job share.

After 1 April, any leave you have carried over will be calculated and added to your total leave entitlement for the current year on Employee self-service (iTrent). Follow the steps below to view your total leave entitlement, including your carry over amount.

    Carry over leave not showing?

Your carry over of leave should be processed automatically for any unused hours up to your contracted allowance. These hours should be available for you to book from 1 April. If your leave entitlement isn’t correct, you can:

If you have worked for the council, or another local government organisation, continuously for five or more years, you will qualify for long service leave entitlement.

    Want to know more?

You can read more about long service entitlement in following section of the annual leave guidelines:

    • Section 6: Long service entitlement

Three days, previously known as concessionary and extra statutory days and usually allocated over the Christmas period, are now included in your annual leave entitlement.

This means if you wish to take leave on normal working days, which are not public holidays, over the Christmas period you must now submit a request for leave.

    If there is:

    • an operational requirement for your service to remain open over the Christmas period, your manager will need to make sure that there is sufficient cover before they can authorise your leave
    • no operational requirement for your service over the Christmas period, your leave will be granted.
    Working over the Christmas period

If you wish to work over the Christmas period, so you can use this leave at another time during the year, you should raise this with your manager.

    Want to know more?

You can read more about bank and public holidays and how they are calculated in the following sections of the annual leave guidelines:

    • Section 7: Public holidays
    • Section 19: Calculating public holidays if you are part-time or job share.

    Long-term absence

If you are taking maternity, adoption or share parental leave, you should arrange to take your annual leave within the appropriate leave year.

Where it has not been possible for you to take leave due to a long-term absence, such as sickness or maternity leave, that crossed the end of the leave year, then your outstanding contractual leave will be carried over to the next leave year. This will be added to your leave entitlement and will show in iTrent.
